Happy 30th BIRTHDAY to Scott, my last born!!
This morning we had the usual 6am wake up call to start the day!! I am NOT an early morning person so don't function well at this time and don't like being woken up at any time really.
After an early breakfast we were back on our bus (number 1 out of 3 in total) to drive down the deserted highway to Old Delhi. The highway was built at great expense by one of the richest families in India. This family must have a LOT of money because they are also building multiple high rise blocks of units. Not many people use the highway because there is a toll. The trip to Delhi takes about 2 hours.
On our arrival we visited the old Red Fort for those who want a quick visit and for those that just want a quick photo like us can wonder the streets for 30 minutes. Wow what an exciting and busy place this is with many little street sellers peddling anything from fireworks, to haircuts, to shaves, to bulk grain, to squeezed lemons.... You name it and you can get it for a price to be negotiated. The main mode of transport close to the fort is by rickshaw, motorbike or push bike with the odd motorised truck, tourist bus and taxi. We were all transported by rickshaw through the market to the bus parking lot. Quite a long way and a bit hair raising with so many rickshaws all trying to burn each other off!!
We then boarded our bus and proceeded to Rajghat and Ghandi's tomb which is in the middle of a beautifully manicured park.
After a leisurely stroll through the park we headed to The Park Hotel where our standard curry buffet lunch was awaiting before heading for the airport for our 4 hour flight to Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Our flight was full and on time landing at 10.30pm. We had a 1 hour drive to our hotel in Colombo which meant we arrived at about midnight and were greeted with tea, coffee and curry spring rolls!!
Can't wait for some normal food!!
To bed at 1am and dread the thought of our 6am wakeup call!!!
Driving through the streets of Agra
These carts are actually used during the day!
Passing countryside from the bus - lots of rice paddies and sugarcane
The Grand Prix is being held here next month.
A familiar shot
Breakfast....
The Red Fort in Old Delhi - made of red sandstone. Shah Jahan commissioned the construction of the Fort in 1638 when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi.
Theses were delicious - condensed milk deep fried!!
Fireworks for sale
Bulk anything available here
Off to school.
Our parade of rickshaws which caused a minor traffic jam!! Not the complex web of electricity wires overhead.
Ghandi's memorial - an eternal flame burns in the middle at the head end of the stone. The memorial was designed to reflect Ghandi's simple life. The inscription in the stone "He Ram" (Oh God) is believed to be Ghand's last words.
