Sunday 8th September

Marseille, France
Today was another private tour for 8 and our guide was Gilles who met us at the port at 8.30 for our day of sightseeing.  We headed straight to Aix en Provence, the city of Cezanne.  As it was early and a Sunday the streets were very quiet with not many shops open other than the f & v market and the odd cafe.  We started our walk at the big fountain at the main roundabout and walked up Cours Mirabeau, the richest Provence Avenue.  Wondering thought the streets we came across a museum that was open and the church that was preparing for the Sunday morning service.  The church was quite amazing inside with lots of interesting art and the museum housed a number of interesting artefacts including a couple of miniature displays of early life.
We then drove past Cezanne's house and went for a walk to the viewpoint where he painted many versions of his famous painting of the mountain opposite.
Next stop was the beautiful seaside village of Cassis, known for its fresh seafood and fine local wines.  We had enough free time to enjoy a sit down lunch and a stroll through the streets.  I could definitely spend a few days here.  Beautiful!
As we had such a beautiful clear day we drove to the famous cliff top named Cap Canaille located about 400m above sea level offering astonishing views over the Mediterranean.
Back to Marseille to check out the old fort that has just reopened after major renovations and what a great area to roam around on a Sunday if you were a local.  A quick stop at the Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica which offers 360 degree breath-taking views of Marseille and surrounds.
Marseille is the largest port in the Mediterranean and is the second largest city in France.
Another hectic but memorable day helped by a glass or two of wine over lunch.  Tomorrow is a sea day!!!! Yay!!! Time to sit around the pool and read my book for the first time since I left home!!!!
